HPOU’s sponsorship of “Houston Strong” T-shirt sales resulted in a contribution of just under $9,000 to Assist the Officer Foundation – just one of a growing number of partnerships that result in helping HPD officers in need.
ATO’s Tom Hayes more T-shirt sales are in the offing, probably new shirts with new designs that will be on sale at the HPOU store on the third floor of the Union building.
HPOU’s Lisa Marino designed the first Houston Strong shirts and credited country and western singer Luke Bryan with lighting the spark that resulted in increased sales.
Marino said Bryan appeared in a Sept. 22 concert at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion in The Woodlands, performing his songs after an HPD officer provided him with a Houston Strong T-shirt, which he promptly donned and wore the entire concert.
“We liked him as our model on Facebook,” she said. “Everyone loved the picture and loved the shirt. As long as they still want them we will keep making them.”
Marino said the shirt idea was originated by HPOU President Joe Gamino and from there the project became “a great team effort.”
She said the Facebook posting prompted a run on the shirts by HPD officers and their families as well as police supports from throughout Houston.
