SOMETIMES WE TAKE THE SUCCESS STORIES of great HPOU traditions for granted.
For this reason the Badge & Gun takes its figurative hat off to Sgt. Rhonda Williams and members of the HPOU Education Committee for their extraordinary preparation and execution of the April 7 presentation breakfast for the 107 recipients of the annual HPOU Scholarships.
This year’s awards numbers broke old records – not necessarily a significant event since the records get broken every year. But we will underscore those numbers: 107 recipients and $50,250 in scholarships geared to help the sons and daughters of HPOU members undertake that very challenging first year of higher education.
Sgt. Williams’enterprising approach found sponsors for the scrumptious breakfast as well as the trophies presented each scholarship recipient, each of whom received a trophy as well as a check. Bravo, Rhonda! You have set higher standards and expectations. The Badge & Gun calls that typical examples of worthy achievements – this one spotlighting the greatest blessings of Houston police officers, their college-age sons and daughters.
We can’t help but recognize the sponsors and, of course, the other HPOU Education Committee members.
First the committee members: Eric Carr, Ken Nealy, Frances Domingues, Debbie Lahaie, Joseph Castaneda, Nhatthien Nguyen and Rosalinda Ybanez.
We will never forget these dedicated sponsors. The lead sponsors were Galls Uniforms – Houston and the Corporate Office of Blauer. Other gracious sponsors were the Corporate Office of Kroger along with Chick-Fil-A – Sawyer Heights, Jason’s Deli (Corporate Office), Edward Jones (Pat P. A hearty THANK YOU to each of these sponsors, who demonstrated their undying support for law enforcement officers and their families.
And one final tip of the hat. Williams said she couldn’t fail to recognize HPOU’s dedicated everyday servant, Lisa Marino. In Williams’ words, “I have to add a special thank you to Lisa Marino for all her hard work and dedication to her job. She is a precious jewel and worthy to be acknowledged.”
