April 2016 Obituaries

BALDERAS

Retired Senior Jail Attendant Leonard Balderas passed away on Sunday, February 7, 2016, at the age of 63. He is survived by his wife, Elva G. Balderas. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He joined the Houston Police Department on February 20, 1984. Senior Jail Attendant Leonard Balderas retired on September 1, 2004, while assigned to the Jail Division. Services were held February 16 with burial in Houston National Cemetery.

BIAGAS

Mr. Roland P. Biagas, Sr., 77, passed away on Monday, January 18, 2016. He is the father of Police Officer Sheree M. Biagas, assigned to the Northeast Division.  Services were held January 23.

BOOZIER

Retired Senior Inventory Management Clerk Yvonne Boozier passed away on Tuesday, February 9, 2016.  She is the mother of Retired Lieutenant Marcus A. Davis and grandmother of Office Supervisor Marcus A. Davis II, assigned to the Records Division. Services were held February 15.

BUCHANAN

Mrs. Selena Buchanan passed away on Wednesday, February 10, 2016 at the age of 83. She is the mother of Administration Manager Jacqueline D. Lane, assigned to the Office of the Chief of Police. Services were held February 20 with burial in Houston memorial Gardens Cemetery.

CAMPBELL

Senior Police Officer James K. Campbell, 60, passed away on Saturday, February 6, 2016.  He joined Police Academy Class No. 104, on March 22, 1982.  He was a veteran of the United States Army. During his career, he served at the Northeast Division, Traffic/Accident Division, Tactical Operations Division, Robbery Division and the Major Offenders Division.  He retired on February 1, 2003. After retirement he served as an Investigator for the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.  Officer Campbell is survived by his wife, Carmen Campbell. Services were held February 11 with burial in Forest Park Lawndale.

 COLLINS

Retired Police Officer Ray Collins passed away on Tuesday, February 16, 2016; He joined Police Academy Class No. 25 on December 9, 1963.  During his career, he served at the Central Division, Jail Division, Emergency Communications Division, North Division, Identification Division, Homicide Division and retired on March 11, 2000 while last assigned to the Airport Division.  Ray is the brother of Retired Lieutenant Jack Collins, who retired while last assigned to the Major Offenders Division in 1984.  Officer Collins is survived by his wife, Mary F. Collins and daughter, Patricia. Services were held February 20 with burial in Earthman Resthaven Cemetery.

DAVIS

Mrs. Laverne M. Davis, 90, passed away on Thursday, February 4, 2016. She was preceded in death by her husband, retired Police Officer Joe H. Davis, who retired on January 3, 1977, and passed away on September 21, 1991. Services were held February 11 with burial in Lovelady, Texas.

ECHEVERRI

Mr. Ramon Echeverri passed away on Monday, February 15, 2016. He is the father-in-law of Wayne S. Conner, assigned to the Technology Services Command. Services were held February 20 with burial in Forest Park Westheimer Cemetery.

GARMOND

Mr. Charles H. Garmond passed away on Friday, February 5, 2016.  He is the father of Senior Police Officer Charles P. Garmond (PD-C).  Mr. Garmond was a veteran of the United States Army.  Services were held February 13 with burial in Prairie Grove Cemetery.

JANKOWSKI

Brandon Allen Jankowski, 30, was killed in a hit and run crash early Saturday, February 13, 2016.  He is the son of Senior Police Officer Clemence Jankowski, assigned to the Central Division. Brandon was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps and was studying to become a missionary evangelist overseas. Services were held February 20 with burial in Houston National Cemetery.

KELLEY

Mr. Randall W. Kelley, Sr., 57, passed away on Wednesday, February 3, 2016. He is the father of Police Officer Randall W. Kelley, Jr., assigned to the Special Victims Division. Services were held February 13 with burial in Houston Memorial Gardens.

LESLIES

Jennifer I. Leslies passed away on Saturday, February 6, 2016.  She is the sister of Sergeant Edward T. Fendia, assigned to the Jail Division. Services were held February 21.

MACHAC

Retired Lieutenant George L. Machac passed away on Friday, February 12, 2016, at the age of 79. He is the father of Senior Police Officer Tommy L. Machac, assigned to the North Division, and Police Officer Michael W. Machac, assigned to the Northeast Division. He is also the father-in-law of Tommy’s wife, Sergeant Mary R. Machac, assigned to the Northwest Division. Lieutenant Machac joined the Houston Police Department on December 29, 1958, Academy Class No. 20. He retired on February 4, 1994 while assigned to the Air Support Division.  Services were held February 16 with burial in Lovelady.

MONTALVO

Mr. Eulalio “Lalo” Montalvo, 83, passed away on Wednesday, January 27, 2016. He is the father of Police Officer Martin G. Montalvo, assigned to the North Division; uncle of Lieutenant Roberto Montalvo, assigned to The Criminal Intelligence Division and Sergeant Raymundo Montalvo, Jr., assigned to the Narcotics Division; uncle-in-law of Executive Assistant Chief Martha Montalvo; and granduncle of Police Officer Roberto Montalvo, assigned to the Central Division.  Services were held February 2 with burial in Tomball.

MORRIS

Kathryn Inez Morris passed away on Saturday, February 13, 2016.  She is the surviving spouse of Police Officer Emerald Lyonell Morris, who passed away April 8, 1978.  She is survived by her daughter, Sue Burleson; and sons, John Morris and Emerald Morris, Jr.  Kathryn was the sister of former Meter Maid Melony Daniel and sister-in-law of Retired Police Officer Joel Daniel.

 NORTHINGTON

Mrs. Vivian (Davis) Northington, 87, passed away on Saturday, February 13, 2016. She is the mother-in-law of Senior Police Officer Ronnie N. James, assigned to the Northeast Division.

Services were held February 20 in Brenham with burial in Chappell Hill.

SHELTON

Mr. Lawrence “Larry” H. Shelton, Jr., 68, passed away on Saturday, February 13, 2016. He is the father of Police Officer Cindy M. Shelton, assigned to the Special Victims Division. Services were held February 15.

 SPRIGGS

Mr. Kevin Spriggs passed away on Tuesday, February 16, 2016. He is the brother of Senior Police Officer Clay R Spriggs, assigned to the Northwest Division / DTU. Services were held February 22 with burial in Memorial Oaks Cemetery.

STERLING

Senior Police Officer Duane Edward Sterling passed away on Thursday, January 28, 2016 at the age of 46. He joined the Houston Police Department on October 28, 1996, Academy Class No. 169. He resigned from the Houston Police Department on October 22, 1997. Senior Police Officer Sterling came back to join the ranks of the Houston Police Department on July 6, 1998. He was assigned to the Identification Division until the day of his passing. Services were held February 3 with burial in Grand View Memorial Park in Pasadena.

SUMMERFIELD

Mrs. Pearl T. Summerfield, 98, passed away on Saturday, January 30, 2016. She is the grandmother of Senior Police Officer Lemant D. Monroe, assigned to the Midwest Division / DTU. Services were held February 4 with burial in Houston National Cemetery.

WOFFORD

Criminal Intelligence Analyst Melissa A. Wofford passed away on Wednesday, January 27, 2016, at the age of 36. She joined the Houston Police Department on July 5, 2005, and was assigned to the Narcotics Division. Melissa resigned from the Houston Police Department on September 2006 to go to work for the United States Marshalls Office until August 24, 2015. Melissa Wofford returned to work at the Houston Police Department on August 31, 2015. She was assigned to the Special Victims Division until the day of her passing. Services were held February 3 with burial in Hayes Grace Memorial Park Cemetery in Hitchcock.
