Members of the blue family showed up from far and wide in the wake of the flood waters of Hurricane Harvey. The HPD record showed 516 officers from 28 outside law enforcement agencies came to Houston to help out on patrol beats.
Capt. Bryan Bennett of the Auto Theft Division said these numbers are conservative since they don’t include an unofficial number of officers brought in and supervised by the Texas Department of Public Safety.
“The problem is it’s unknown who actually came in from DPS,” Bennett said. “The number would include other police departments from all over the state.”
Bennett was in charged with coordinating the outside officers and making sure they were assigned to beats all over the city.
He said each police agency who sent its patrol officers should be extended a giant THANK YOU.
DPS actually supplied Houston with 121 troopers, most of whom were assigned to help evacuees at the George R. Brown Convention Center.
At the top of the list of police departments is Fort Worth PD, which sent a total of 97 officers. The Cowtown force was followed by Austin PD with 44, El Paso PD with 36, San Antonio PD with 30 and Arlington PD with 22. Arlington should go up in the score-keeping total, having sent another 19.
