Assist the Officer was able to provide more than $800,000 in monetary aid to first responders who work in Harris County.

This would not have happened without the generous support from citizens, businesses, foundations and law enforcement groups from around the country. Many donations came from individuals independent of a group, including citizens from a multitude of states and active and retired police officers. They also came from law enforcement groups and departments large and small.

Some of the foundations who contributed were the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation, Yarmouth Police Foundation, Cook County Sheriffs Memorial Foundation, Brown Foundation, Albert & Ethel Herzstein Foundation, Visalia Foundation and Jackson Foundation.

A small sample of law enforcement groups outside Texas who provided support for Hurricane Harvey relief included:

  • La Habra, California PD
  • Chicago PD
  • Los Angeles County Sheriffs (retired)
  • Nassau County, New York PD
  • Kauai, Hawaii PD
  • Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin PD
  • Broward County, Florida PBA
  • Long Beach, California PD
  • King, North Carolina PD
  • Leesburg, Virginia PD
  • Benevolent Association (NYPD)
  • Counterterrorism Bureau (NYPD)
  • Detectives Endowment (NYPD)
  • Syracuse, New York Retirees Association
  • Trooper Memorial Fund NY
  • New York State Police Investigators Association Emergency Assistance Fund
  • Geneva, Ohio PD
  • Central Virginia Orange County Sheriff
  • Arlington County, Virginia PD
  • Boston Public Health PD
  • Maryland Natural Resources FOP
  • Annapolis, Maryland PD
  • Howard County (Maryland) Police Association FOP
  • Stokes County, North Carolina FOP
  • Los Angeles Police Protective League
  • Los Angeles School Police Association
  • Ottawa, Ontario Police Association
  • Upper St Clair, Pennsylvania Police Association
  • Oakland Police Officers Association
  • Tulsa, Oklahoma PD
  • Oak Bluffs, Massachusetts PD
  • Officer Sean Collier Memorial Fund (Massachusetts)
  • Aurora, Illinois PD
  • Skokie, Illinois FOP
  • Rome, Georgia PD
  • Newington, Connecticut Police Association
  • Churchill County, Nevada Sheriff Deputies Association

Too many other law enforcement groups from across the state and country provided support for Hurricane Harvey relief to list.  Apologies to those not listed, a large box of letters, notes and cards from the various groups remains in the union available for members to read.

ATO and First Responders Benefit Trust staff members worked tirelessly in the distribution of gift cards so generously donated Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation, HoneyBaked Ham product cards on behalf of the Gary Sinise Foundation and Kroger gift cards provided by the Emergency Aid Coalition.

While there were many groups who came to our aid, we must give a special acknowledgement and thanks to St. Martin’s Episcopal Church and Trinity Lutheran Church.

Special thanks to American Police Beat and Caliber Press for making others aware of the needs facing first responders in Harris County.

And, finally, deserving of a big thanks are the board members of ATO who worked numerous hours on Harvey relief and other ATO events supporting police officers.
