On January 19, 2012, while on a combat mission a CH53D helicopter assigned to US Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 363, the Red Lions, crashed in the mountains of Afghanistan. Six marines, including Corporal Joey Logan, son of HPD Retirees Tom and Debi Logan, were killed.
To honor the memories of these young men Tom and Debi are in the process of developing a recreational facility, Project Red Lion, for active-duty military personnel and veterans in the mountains of Joey’s beloved Montana. The plan includes the building of six cabins, one for each of the “Fallen Six.”
Three cabins have been completed at this time; two have been furnished.
I met with Tom and Debi and asked what Operation Lone Star could do for Project Red Lion. After a long discussion about their needs I contacted Judy and Sandy and explained what we had discussed.
We agreed that the best course of action would be to completely furnish the remaining cabin. At a later date when the snow clears and Tom and Debi are able to get to the mountain location they will contact us with a list of furnishings they need, as well as where it can be purchased in that area. We will then make arrangements to purchase the items and have them delivered to the Red Lion Project.
In addition, in the summer of 2019 we will make arrangements to purchase and deliver materials needed to build one of the three remaining cabins.
For further information on the facility go to the Red Lion Project website and Facebook.
