Never let it be said that law enforcement officers, particularly those from HPD, don’t take care of their own when a personal crisis arises.
HPD Officer Jerry Flores, one of the Department’s most popular individuals who has been called “a pillar of the community, will be the center of fundraising devotion on Thursday, Aug. 23 at none other than Minute Maid Park.
For, you see, Flores, or “JFLO,” works an extra job for Major League Baseball as a security liaison with the Houston Astros. He’s as widely respected by this World Championship team and its officialdom as he is around HPD.
In case you can’t recall what happened to Flores, 53 and a 26-year HPD veteran, he was working at a Thin Blue Line Motorcycle Club golf tournament in April when he fell off a golf cart and hit his head on the pavement. He was unconscious and in a coma until later in April when he revived. He’s now in a determined recovery period.
Meanwhile, the Assist the Officer Foundation, the Thin Blue Line and the Astros Foundation set up this special fundraiser to help defray medical expenses. The event will be held at the Diamond Lot on the east side of Minute Maid. It’s a huge parking lot and you can’t miss it.
Here’s the plan: the event hours are from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. on the 23rd. A $15 ticket (obtainable at the HPOU) will get you all the barbecue you can eat with drinks and sides and admission to silent and live auctions featuring innumerable sports memorabilia items, vacations, special souvenirs and anything else considered fun and beneficial when it’s bid on by generous, caring people.
Tickets will be sold until Aug. 17, the cutoff date.
Allan Helfman of River Oaks Chrysler Jeep, as usual, will spearhead the live auction activities amid the glamor and excitement of one of America’s most notable baseball arenas. The Astros, of course, will be kicking in many auction items designed to attract those high bids and competitive bidders.
Senior Police Officer Stephanie Reyes goes back a long way with Flores. She works closely with him in the MLB security detail at Minute Maid. Reyes has been compiling a special – and growing – list of auction items. They include but are not limited to the following:
- A three-night vacation in Port Aransas.
- A Del Rio ranch vacation.
- A resort vacation in Belize.
- Five separate sessions with financial advisor Toby Whitby of Logic Capital Management for financial planning and retirement plans.
- A signed guitar from Quiet Riot of Proof Rooftop Lounge.
- A “Day at the Park” sponsored by C and D Scrap Metals Recyclers, featuring autographed souvenirs, four field box tickets to an Astros game along with many other prizes.
- A Thin Blue Line flag that recently flew over the Pentagon.
